OTI: the grandmultipara postpartum edition

I love themed linky posts thingies.  Like 7 Quick Takes and {p.f.h.r.} and Pinning it Down and that photography thing that one blogger sometimes manages to organize once a month.

So when Grace (you know Grace, right?) brought the Open to Interpretation linky post thingie to my attention, I knew I had to participate.

Why?
Easy.
1.  I am hopelessly unfashionable.  Sure, sure, I have a killer shoe collection, but that is entirely the work of my husband, who has better taste in shoes than I do (last pair of shoes I bought solo?  Orange plastic flip flops, $3, local gas station)  Taking part in a fashion link up would make me think outside my normal "if it's not visibly covered in spitup, it's fashionable" mentality.  If only for two pictures.

2.  Taking part in a fashion linkup would be educational.  In my head, "fashion" usually translates to "look like a hobo"
See?
hobos
So maybe participating in a fashion linkup would require me to explore the depths of fashion a little deeper than I'm wont to do.  You know, like a "turn that hobo into boho" sort of thing.  (Heh.  That one's clever, isn't it?  I came up with that during a 3a.m. nursing session while wondering what in the hell I was doing posting anything about fashion)

3.  It would be funny.  Honestly, having a woman, 5 weeks postpartum with her 6th child take part in anything with "fashion" in the title that didn't also include "frumpy" or "cautionary tale" in the title is guaranteed to be amusing.

So there we go.  I decided to jump in with this particular inspiration piece, since it seemed most hobo- errr...I mean boho-ish, and thus easiest to copy.  Strategy: find things that seemed least likely to go together, throw a jean jacket over it, and set the self-timer on the camera.
Plus, it was in no way black.  And, as Ken is so fond of pointing out, I have an overabundance of black in my wardrobe.
Sue me.  I never fully emerged from my goth girl high school phase.
ROBERT SMITH FOREVAH!

So here's my spot-on interpretation:
As you can see from my extremely natural presence in front of the camera, modeling is second nature to me.  And since New England has decided to become a semi-arctic rainforest, I didn't have any trees or mountains or some such as a backdrop.  Oh no.  Only the screen door.

Let's take a closer look:
brightly colored maxi skirt (look!  notblack!):  Target
printed shirt (look!  also notblack!): also Target
scarf:  Charming Charlie
silver cuff: Dwija
silver-and-gold sequin flip flops (selected by 9 year old daughter) Bob's
jean jacket: Old Navy
sunglasses: service station halfway between Harford and Boston
hair: courtesy 340958345908% humidity

Ok, so teasing aside (auxiliary motto:  Make fun of yourself before anyone else can), if/when/ever I get the rest of this baby weight off, the shirt is something I'd wear with lots of different bottoms (just not the purple skirt).  I love orange, and while I'm not usually a fan of tank tops, at some point it may actually get warm here in CT, so I'll be glad I have it.
The skirt is also nice.  I like maxi skirts.  It's like wearing socially acceptable pajamas in public.  And I like the purple, but I would normally pair it up with....oh....black.

So there we go.  It can never be said that I'm afraid of moving outside my comfort zone.
Just don't make me leave my house to do it.
You can see Kayla and Erica and Grace's interpretations for better backgrounds, better outfits, better models and better commentary.

  3. Hey, I actually own an outfit just like that! I wear it all the time. I had no idea how fashionable I am. Neon long knit skirt and t-shirt. I might just have to participate in this linkup now...

You look fantabulous btw. Somehow I think you pull it off way better than I do. Something about the #1 google search leading to my blog being "how to dress like a mom."

    1. I was trolling down this list to tell Cari how hopelessly hot she looks in her shockingly unrealistic postpartumness, but instead I'll stop here and commiserate with you Steph.

Also, double Spanx? Friggin genius! I never thought ... but what the hell, it makes sooooo much sense!

      Also a vomitous hippo,

      Jenny

  8. You look so awesome. Orange + purple= awesome!

And you know what else? You're totally not pregnant. Not even a little! Do you think I can find a proper fashion photo of some pregnant celeb or model wearing a purple polo shirt and khaki cargo capris? Then I can pretend that my outfit today was inspired by them and aren't just the only things that fit me....

  9. Your outfit is adorable!!! Maybe colored maxis and bright tops should become your go-to uniform instead of black :-)
